In collaboration with the remarkable Kiwix team, we embarked on an ambitious journey called “Makumbusho”—Swahili for museum. The vision behind this project was to enable the creation of mobile content based on WikiProjects, offering a compelling demonstration of the value of the knowledge curated by the Wiki community over the years.
As part of this ongoing effort, Kiwix has made a major breakthrough with the development of an outstanding tool: the WP1 Server, also known as Wikipedia on Demand.
This innovative tool allows any Wikimedian to easily generate ZIM files—offline versions of selected wiki content—based on custom criteria such as a Wikidata SPARQL query or a PetScan selection, all within just a few clicks.
These ZIM files can then be read on mobile devices using the Kiwix reader, making rich Wiki content accessible even without an internet connection. At Wiki World Heritage, we’ve used this tool in 2024 to create two ZIM files featuring two UNESCO World Heritage cities: Grand-Bassam in Côte d’Ivoire and the Medina of Fez in Morocco.
